Readercon Readings

I went to some terrific readings at Readercon this time around.  Not great with remembering the titles, but I can usually give some indication as to what the stories were about or where to find them.  All of these are worth checking out when they appear in the coming year.  Some are out already.
Kit Reed read a satirical piece about the first US Writers Museum.  Not sure where this one will appear, but if you run across it definitely check it out.  Some really pointed insights about the writing life.
Peter Straub read a piece of a novella that appeared in Conjunctions.  I remember the title had the name Sandine in it.  Funny but weird as all get out and quite dark.  Two people on a cruise down the Amazon on a boat manned by a crew the passangers never see.  A surreal tour de force.
John Langan read part of his story from the upcoming anthology, Ghosts by Gaslight -- "The Unbearable Proximity of Mr. Dunn's Balloons."  Langan manages to create this weird sense of menace from said balloons, The characters get vaguely ill around them and are always slowly inching away.  Gotta read the rest of it when the book comes out.
Ellen Klages read a creepy half of a story, dealing with a child and her witch puppet.  It got even creepier when, at the end of the session, Ellen produced the puppet.  Arrgh!. Thanks for the nightmares. Great writing.  This will appear in Jonathan Strahan's upcoming Witch-themed anthology.
Another powerfully creepy story was read by Kaaron Warren about a miner trapped underground and his meeting with a bizarre evil entity.  Chilling stuff.   Perfect pacing as the horror builds through the fiction. I forget the title, but I know it will appear in Ellen Datlow's adult Vampire anthology soon forthcoming.
Barbara Krasnoff's "Red Dybbuk" is an effecting story about generations of women in a Jewish American family and an interfamily haunting.  Fantastic Yiddish/ American dialogue/dialect.  Quite moving.
And there were many more I heard while participating in group readings for three of Ellen Datlow's new anthologies.  Too many to remember and write about by John Crowley, Caitlin Kiernan, Matt Kressel, Ellen Kushner,Steve Berman, Paul Tremblay, Delia Sherman, etc, etc. Really first-rate short fiction.  My head was spinning with story on the plane ride home today.  So this year's Readercon was very inspirational.
